2008 SUMMER READING LIST FOR STUDENTS ENTERING FOURTH GRADE AT ST. ANDREW’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL

FROM THE FOURTH GRADE TEACHERS:

Even though abilities and interests vary greatly among 4th graders, they should
all be moving into an independent level of reading. Some children may have
begun to choose a particular subject or genre, while others continue to read a
wide variety of literature. We strongly suggest that rising fourth graders’ summer
reading include the practice of reading a minimum of thirty minutes daily.

Students have three required books to read and respond to over the summer, as
specified below. Each will have a required written activity as noted.

The B F G, by Roald Dahl
Students will write a paragraph summary after reading
each chapter.*

Who Was…? Book series. Publisher: Grosset and Dunlap
These biography books are by assorted authors.
Students will choose a biography from this series to read.
After completing, they will complete the biography summary
forms  - Biography Report Form Link. The biography book should
be brought to school the first week back.*

Students have a choice of the following three novels for their third required
reading:
The Cricket in Times Square, by George Selden
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, by E. L.
Konigsburg
Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, by Judy Blume
Students will fill in the novel report form for the book they
choose - Novel Report Form Link.*

*All summaries and forms are to be brought to school in a folder
the first day of school.

Classroom discussion and activities will begin with the biographies when the
students return to school.

Happy reading!
