Governance of the School

In 1982 the Vestry of St. Andrew's Cathedral and the School's Board of Trustees joined together in good faith to seek timely changes in the legal structure of the School. The Vestry, by resolution, formally recognized "the administrative independence of the Day School" and reaffirmed at the same time that "the theology of the Day School is ecumenical, deeply respectful of the faith of others, yet uncompromising in the Christian principles and doctrine as related to the Episcopal Church."

These principles were implemented by amendments to the Charter and By-Laws of the School, transferring majority membership of the Corporation from the Vestry to 20 persons elected by the Vestry, thereby permitting election of Episcopalians from various churches, as well as non-Episcopalians. In 1990 the By-Laws were amended to increase the number of the Corporation members elected by the Vestry to 24 persons. The Corporation, in turn, elects the Board of Trustees, currently 23 in number, who, in addition to serving as members of the Corporation, oversee the School's financial well-being, establish overall policy, and actively operate St. Andrew's through the Head of School.

The Head of School is the administrative and operating head of the School. Appointed by the Board, St. Andrew's Head of School is empowered with the authority and responsibility for the day-to-day management of the School and carrying out Board-established policies. Administrative teams work hand-in-glove with the Head of School; to them are delegated many important responsibilities, including direct supervision of teachers, staff, and students.
